If even one of these tips resonates with you, then writing this list was completely worth it.<p><br /><ol><br /><li>Pick a publishing schedule and stick to it. Especially if you are just starting out, this can be the make-or-break between building a sizeable following.</li><br /><li>Know your audience. Does your webcomic appeal to movie fans, computer geeks, indy music lovers, etc.? Who are you creating your comic for? Answer these questions first before moving to #3.</li><br /><li>Make connections with sites that are related to your specific subject matter. A friendly introduction and link exchange are good ways to approach this. Or purchase a block of advertising if a link exchange is not possible.</li><br /><li>Meet the community. Hang out on sites like <a href="http://www.comixpedia.com" target="blank"> Comixpedia</a>, <a href="http://www.fleen.com" target="blank"> Fleen</a>, <a href="http://www.onlinecomics.net" target="blank">Online Comics</a>, <a href="http://www.comicspace.com" target="blank">Comicspace</a> and <a href="http://www.buzzcomix.net" target="blank">Buzzcomix</a>.</li><br /><li>Resist your temptation to whore your site on message boards. The best way to get people to check out your work is to put the URL for your site in your signature file when posting on message boards. Contribute to the discussion at hand - become a part of the community (as opposed to a spammer).</li><br /><li> Get Tracking. You need to know where your visitors are coming from - obtain a website tracking app such as <a href="http://getclicky.com/5656" target="blank"> Clicky</a> or <a href="http://extremetracking.com/" target="blank"> extremeTracking</a> for this. Many hosting companies provide stat software for free - make sure you find one that is easy to read and use. You will become a stats junkie in the process (<em>like me</em>). ;)</li><br /><li>Make it easy to spread the word about your comic. Electronic postcards using your toons is one way. Offering a mailing list where readers can receive your comics in their InBox is another. And, of course, RSS feeds for your comic are crucial.</li><br /><li>Provide guest-art for comics you like. Take advantage of the opportunity when a webcartoonist puts out a request for guest-strips. It's good karma, and a GREAT way to get the word out about your work. Of course, your work has to be top-notch - you never get a chance to make another first impression</li><br /><li>There are more, but this one is often the most overlooked tip in the whole shebang: Respond to your fan e-mail in a timely fashion ALWAYS. With e-mail overload being what it is, it may not be possible to send a reply right away. Do your best to return a response as soon as you can. If someone is writing to give you kudos on your work - write back and show them your appreciation.
